Da Vinci progettò un ponte autoportante. Lo ideò in modo che l’esercito, in caso di ritirata, potesse montarlo rapidamente, attraversare il fiume e poi smontarlo. Ciò era possibile perché il ponte non richiedeva chiodi, viti o corde: la sua struttura si regge grazie al sostegno reciproco dei singoli elementi.
A Vipava sono stati costruiti due ponti di questo tipo. Sebbene in sdorigine fosse stato concepito per scopi militari, oggi il ponte di Da Vinci rappresenta un simbolo di collegamento tra luoghi e persone.
Da Vinci also sketched plans for a self-supporting bridge. It was designed such that a retreating army could assemble it quickly, use it to cross a river, and then dismantle it before fleeing further. This was made possible because the bridge required no nails, screws, or ropes to stand, planned with components supporting one another through clever interlocking geometry.
Two such bridges span the Vipava River. Despite being conceived for military applications, today the Da Vinci bridge is a symbol of the interconnection between people and places.
