Da Vinci studiò le sorgenti e i corsi del fiume Vipacco. La sua idea era di sistemare delle dighe mobili in modo da fermare le acque per inondare l'intera area e in tal modo fermare l'avanzamento delle truppe nemiche.
Il genio della diga di Da Vinci sta nella sua struttura: è estremamente stabile e più aumenta la pressione dell’acqua più la chiusura diventa ermetica. Dighe di questo tipo si usano ancora oggi in tutto il mondo, anche nel Canale di Panama.
Se presso il villaggio di Ustje fosse stata costruita una diga alta tra 15 e 20 metri, l’acqua nella valle sarebbe arrivata fino ad Ajdovščina e Vipava!
Da Vinci spent time researching the sources and courses of the Vipava River. It was part of a military plan, as the Venetian army was at war with the Turks at the time. His idea was to set up mobile dams and thus - by stopping the flow of the waters - to flood the entire area and thereby to slow down the progress of the enemy troops.
The genius of Da Vinci’s dam was in its extremely stable construction, which shut ever more tightly the more water it was holding back. Such locks are used today all over the world, including in the Panama Canal.
If a 15- or 20-meter-tall dam were to be built in the village of Ustje, the waters would rise all the way up to Ajdovščina and Vipava!
